Academic Skills/Support Services
The Skills Center is a unique place within the school. It is a department whose main focus is the development of effective, independent learning skills in individual students. Children who may need some additional support mastering an academic skill or overcoming a curricular challenge can benefit from Center programming and resources.
In the Center, students work closely with experienced specialists who provide an individually tailored program to each child. With the encouragement of the specialist, a student begins to set and achieve personal learning goals, develop organizational strategies, take intellectual risks, and attain new levels of competence and confidence. Through guided practice with both specialized and classroom-based materials, children can become increasingly savvy about their own learning styles: strengths and challenges.
During Skills Center sessions students are afforded a quiet, private place to work with consistent feedback and reinforcement for their efforts. Most importantly, students have the opportunity to practice academic, organizational, communication and self-advocacy skills in steps which are manageable for their individual needs. Children are delighted when they know how it feels to be ready to work without special support.
