Academics at Brookwood
Lower, Middle, Upper School Curiculum
Lower School
Our Lower School faculty instills a positive attitude toward learning that is crucial as each student begins to establish an academic foundation. Pre-K through Grade Two are formative years during which children develop basic educational skills. These early years in education are exciting ones, filled with wonder, as students solve their first math problems, publish their first story and learn to read independently. In the Lower School, we focus on establishing solid academic skills as well as fostering the personal growth of each child. Journal writing, visits to the computer lab, the introduction of foreign language in Kindergarten, and hands-on science and social studies projects are just some of the innovative teaching methods which keep our students curious, challenged and involved.

Middle School
In the Middle School, students meet new academic and personal challenges. By promoting the balance between a more demanding curriculum and a nurturing learning environment, our faculty gives students the skills necessary to meet these new experiences. While introducing graded academic achievement, teachers focus on fostering effective study and research habits. Students continue to be active learners who learn to learn from their mistakes and to understand and enjoy the learning process. Classrooms remain predominantly self-contained, but students are introduced to specialized academic disciplines such as social studies. During these three important years of growth, students focus on becoming more self-reliant learners, actively pursuing knowledge from both individual and group perspectives.

Upper School
The quest for excellence requires the taking of risks, and the Upper School sustains an atmosphere in which students feel encouraged to venture out on new and different "intellectual limbs." Shared inquiry and collaborative learning experiences are emphasized in classes that are predominantly student-centered, as opposed to teacher-directed. "Learn by doing" continues to be an important tenet, but the opportunities for in-depth, hands-on learning become more complex and sophisticated. Skill acquisition continues in all disciplines, but organizational and problem-solving strategies receive more emphasis. Unique academic challenges such as the Declamation Contest and the Eighth Grade mock trial foster individual creativity and promote risk-taking, while other projects help students to integrate, synthesize and apply classroom learning to their everyday. Brookwood's challenging academic environment prepares students for the most competitive secondary school life.
