How do we do it?

Specialty Camps:

These morning programs allow students to immerse themselves in an area of interest. Experienced professional educators head up our specialty camps, which are tailored to the ages of participants. These camps are limited in size and enrollment to provide individual attention. Activities reflect our deep understanding of developmental needs and age-appropriate programming. Emphasis on fun,
learning, safety and close relationships mark our specialty programs. Families looking for a full-day experience can choose Outdoor Adventure or other afternoon options as listed.

Sports Camps:

Athletes develop and refine skills in soccer, field hockey and fencing. Top professional coaches focus on individual strengths, develop team play, and challenge campers in a fun learning environment. This is a perfect venue for learning a new sport or increasing fitness, technique and field sense for upcoming seasons.

C.I.T. Program:

New in 2008, campers entering Grades Eight and Nine will develop leadership through working with younger campers and taking part in leadership training activities, including First Aid and CPR certification. Counselor-In-Training sessions are two-week programs designed to build on the strengths and character of each participant.

Early Birds:

Care is available between 7:30am and the beginning of the camp day. Early Birds offers an opportunity to play games, read or relax with a counselor in Brookwood’s DiCroce and Shlopak libraries. Early Birds is offered in one-week increments with sign-up at the time of registration.

Lunch: Campers bring their own lunch. No nuts please! Snack and time for free play are built into each morning and afternoon program.

Contact Information: For more information call Jen Cunningham-Butler 978-526-4500 extension 6244.
This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local Board of Health. Board of Health updates and advisories will be posted at www.brookwood.edu.

Want a hands-on, creative camp this summer? We’ve got it! With the guidance of Cathy Marrero, come learn how to design your own summer fashion - from drawstring pajama pants to tops, shorts or a tote bag. Mrs. Marrero offers individual help to beginning and intermediate sewers alike as they take their designs from concept to product. Campers will evaluate fabrics, how they are constructed, blends, and how to lay out a pattern on the fabric. They will learn to take measurements and figure out sizing. Straight stitching, applying trims, seam finishes, creating a casing, and buttonholes will be explored by hand and with a sewing machine. Cathy Marrero was a designer for eight years and co-teaches sold-out after school sewing classes at Brookwood. We are excited to see what summer sewers will make in this popular camp.

Brookwood English teacher and writer Maile Black is excited to work with aspiring authors and playwrights for this two-week immersion into the writer’s life. First, we’ll examine the elements of a great story and practice creating the different pieces. Then we’ll pull it all together. Write yourself a world and plunge some juicy characters into it. Send them on adventures, throw in some conflict, even sprinkle on a little romance if that’s your thing. By the end of the two-week session, writers can expect to have one solid piece finished, or at least well on the way. We will spend a little time in the second week looking at ways to get published, enter writing contests, and keep the writing bug alive and active throughout the summer and beyond.

What tricks can you convince a marble to perform on its way down from high to low? What happens when a marble hits a turn going really, really fast? Can a marble flying in the air off of one ramp land on the target ramp below? Find out about these and other questions when you come join us for this camp for experimenters who like to have fun! This camp is led by professional Domino Physicist, Peter Bloom.

How did you do that? This is the question students in this camp might hear when people see what they’ve made with their own two hands. Guided by Brookwood School’s woodworking teacher Tim Wright, students will touch upon all aspects of woodworking: determining size and shape, drafting, selecting wood, measuring, marking, cutting, drilling, gluing, nailing, sanding, and finishing. With a strong emphasis on safety in tool use and moving around in a woodshop environment, students will learn to identify and handle tape measures, squares and hand tools such as saws, drills, hammers, and sanders. Students may also be permitted to use power tools such as the drill press, belt sander and band saw with adult supervision. The four-day Woodworking I camp will build lamps, while projects in the full-week Woodworking II could include boats, boxes, lamps, shelves and toys.

Richard Larraga returns to Brookwood to head up this popular camp. The Choral Director and drama teacher at Moses Brown School in Providence, he is joined by last year’s team of Brookwood teacher Eric Vendt and Donna Raskin (Dwight Englewood School). in Brookwood’s pond, stream, woods and nearby salt marsh. They’ll make their own field guides, paint their own bird houses, make a bird feeder, sing, act and play games and activities designed to bring out the richness of life outdoors. Who knows what they’ll discover?

Let’s play chess! From learning the movement of each piece to tactics and strategy, this camp will bring students a new appreciation and love of the game. The first part of the day is spent learning how each piece moves, what pieces are “worth,” how they contribute to overall strategy, and the use of pieces in different situations. Individual and group instruction starts with where players are and builds on that existing knowledge. Each day culminates in a tournament, where players put their new knowledge to the test. A time for snack, outdoor play and lunch round out the chess experience. Senior chess master Mikhail Perelshteyn has been teaching students of all ages for over thirty years. Beginners and experienced players alike will develop problem solving, thinking skills and strategy. No prior experience necessary! We’ll teach you what you need to know to play chess for a lifetime.
