Personification

Personification:

This is a metaphor in which the qualities of a human being are transferred to something that is not a human being

Examples:

  • From The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton:

    Once upon a time there was a Little House way out in the country. She was a pretty Little House and she was strong and well built.

    Here, the little house is given the human qualities of being pretty and female. This may be to associate her with kindness, sweetness, nurturin - qualities often attributed to women.

Additional Discussion:

Some may understand personification as giving human qualities to inanimate objects. Others may include the attribution of human qualities to animals.
