Literary Arts

At Brookwood, we have a culture of comfort with written expression and a common goal of working toward excellence as writers. Our students write to learn and communicate ideas in science, math, social studies, world language, and the arts. Our teachers work collaboratively to develop common expectations and discourse about writing.

The community values and celebrates writing of all kinds. We have a structured, sequenced curriculum for explicit teaching of varied genres, concepts, and skills. Faculty believe that best practices include a reading/writing connection that immerses young writers in reading authentic models of what they themselves write. In this way, students learn from mentor texts and authors with whom they connect.

Recently, our Middle School students were invited to create or find poems about kind thoughts, words, and actions.  All submitted kindness poems are published on the bulletin board in the Dodge Writing Center.  We invite you to stop by for some inspiration.  To view a selection of the Kindness poems from each grade level, click here: Kindness Poems.
