Secondary School Process

At Brookwood we strive to help young people to take risks, explore new frontiers, and learn about themselves as students and community members. Through our curriculum and the relationships forged with faculty, we hope to engender a greater sense of self in each of our students while always pushing them to achieve at their highest.

The Brookwood experience culminates in eighth grade where students are challenged to achieve academically, artistically, athletically, and socially, but all the while our eyes are firmly affixed to the future and the “next step.”  Beginning in the spring of seventh grade, we start the conversation about life after Brookwood where we strive to find the best landing spot for each student in an effort to continue the wonderful work begun at Brookwood.  Students learn, grow, and excel most when the match is right, and finding the most appropriate secondary school is our mission in the Office of the Secondary School Process.

Brookwood does an exceptional job of preparing students for any and all learning environments for secondary school, but each individual is unique and requires a personalized approach and partnership to help find and secure acceptance at the school that is best suited for that student.  Included in this partnership is the student, parents, faculty, and of course the Office of the Secondary School Process.  Together we will work tirelessly to first identify appropriate schools for investigation and then develop a plan that offers both options for the student and family, as well as guidance in completing this arduous and often complex process.  In the end, we hope to secure placement for each student at a secondary school that will both further the good work started at Brookwood and continue to support the growth and development that helps each young person to realize his/her goals and achieve at his/her highest.

Included in this process are the following steps/components:

  1. Several information sessions hosted by the Office of the Secondary School Process beginning in the spring of seventh grade
  2. Classes aimed at helping students through the complicated process of completing applications, interviewing, and scrutinizing each school to find the best match
  3. One on one meetings with the Director of the Secondary School Process to help guide families through the school evaluation and application process
  4. Specific school days set aside for secondary school visits to ensure that students can explore other schools while remaining current with course work
  5. Extensive information about the varied secondary schools including each school’s specialties, strengths, values, size, open house dates, and overall program
  6. Outreach and relationship building with dozens of local independent, public, parochial, day, and boarding schools to help them to best know Brookwood and the caliber of a Brookwood graduate
  7. Guidance regarding the best preparation and strategies in approaching the SSAT, ISEE, HSPT and other standardized application instruments
  8. Ongoing, proactive, and informed guidance to help families to make good choices and navigate this process with confidence and assurance beginning in seventh grade and ending only when placement is secured
  9. Coordination of faculty, students, and Brookwood to ensure that each student is presented authentically and all materials are completed and submitted by given due dates
  10. The security of knowing that each child is well known, understood, and appreciated for his/her talents/skills because it is this depth of understanding that ultimately informs this process and collectively guides everyone’s efforts on behalf of each child

We know the students, we know the schools, and the schools know us. Together we will explore this exciting new frontier to find the best school for every Brookwood graduate.

Cathy Marrero
Associate Director of Secondary School Process

Cathy joined the Brookwood community in 1997 as a new Grade 1 parent and Class Ambassador.  When hired in 2007 as the Assistant to Headmaster John Peterman, and having two sons who already went through the secondary school process, she was uniquely positioned to work with parents embarking on their high school search as necessary in this role.  Now with 10 years of experience coordinating all aspects of application support, coupled with her strong organizational skills and attention to detail, Cathy looks forward to providing greater focus in assisting families on the next steps of their child’s educational journey.
