Technology in the Curriculum

Brookwood strives to engender in its students a technological literacy:

"knowledge about what technology is, how it works, what purposes it can serve, and how it can be used efficiently and effectively to achieve specific goals."

Additionally Brookwood hopes to instill in its students a moral and ethical
foundation for the use of computer technology and telecommunications.

All Brookwood Graduates should be able to:

  1. A. Basic Computer skills
    Identify basic computer parts and functions
    Print, use save and “save as” to a networked drive, local hard drive and temporary device such as a flash drive or CD-R
    Execute basic operational commands [e.g. open, close, new, quit]
    Know and use basic keyboard shortcuts
    Use both MacOSX and WindowsXP operating systems
    Know the proper care and handling of CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives and floppy disks
    Demonstrate the proper care and use of computers and computer accessories
    Cut and paste graphics and text between different applications
    Select items from within different environments [e.g. windows, applications, desktop, etc]
    Identify and use the parts of a keyboard [e.g. command/option/control/escape/shift etc.]
    Execute basic mouse skills [e.g. click, double-click, click & drag, click to select, right-click or Control-click]
  2. B. Keyboarding skills
    Use finger memory rather than visual cues to type at least 40 wpm
    Properly use home keys
  3. C. Word Processing
    Recognize and use typical word processing menu items [e.g. edit, format, insert, save, print]
    Use the toolbar and items therein
    Use basic editing techniques
    Use basic layout and formatting tools [e.g. center, left justify, indent, double-spacing]
    Use graphics in a text environment
    Use text as a graphic element in a word processing environment
    Use spell check and other writing tools
  4. D. Spreadsheet
    Format a document
    Format cells within a document
    Use basic calculations within a spreadsheet [e.g. AVG, SUM, basic math functions]
    Graph selected cells of data and manipulate the various components of a graph
  5. E. Database
    Understand the basic language of databases [e.g. field, radio button, pop-up menu, record]
    Create a database and enter data
    Create new layouts in a database
    Manipulate fields in a database for a newly required output
    Search and sort data within the database
  6. F. Multimedia
    Build a project using a hypermedia program employing the use of graphics, text, audio, animation, interactive buttons [Hyperstudio - Roger Wagner publishing]
    Import graphics, text, video, audio files, etc into the hypermedia and presentation environment
    Use PowerPoint to create an animated presentation containing multiple slides, text and graphics
    Use iMovie to build a video project

  7. G. Graphics [KidPix, AppleWorks, Powerpoint]
    Understand and use basic graphics tools
    Create slide shows or presentations
  8. H. Internet
    Use web browsers and their features [e.g. Bookmarks, clearing cookies, blocking pop-ups]
    Understand and use various online search tools effectively and efficiently
    Locate and use specific internet tools such as rhyming dictionaries and calculators
    Capture graphics and text from a web browser into a word processer *see ethics below
    Evaluate internet sources for value, validity, and legitimacy
    Understand the language/hierarchy of web addresses and email
  9. I. Information Management
    Create folders/directories in a logical manner to facilitate organization, storage and retrieval of information
    Evaluate all sources of information for accuracy, bias, currency, difficulty, and scope.
    Connect to a file server to deposit and/or retrieve files from a student-owned folder or public folder
  10. J. Ethics and Legal Issues
    Understand Brookwood’s Acceptable Use Policy
    Recognize and respect basic copyright laws
    Recognize that reference materials must be put in own words or cited properly
    Respect people’s privacy in an electronic and telecommunications medium
    Recognize that relationships between people extend into the virtual world as well as what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate behavior in these virtual relationships
    Understand the risks associated with revealing too much personal information online
    Deal in an appropriate manner if they feel uncomfortable in an online situation
    Model ethical behavior relating to security, privacy, passwords, and personal information
    Employ appropriate methods to protect their privacy and themselves online

    Use web graphics in the design and development of web pages
    Use a flatbed scanner and digital camera
  15. N. Graphic Design
    Ability to use basic features of Adobe Photoshop Elements in order to manipulate graphics and photos
