Shot. Score. Loss.

“. . . .a corner was called in favor of Andover.  I instructed Liza, our goalie, to lay down across the goal line to block the shot.  She was hesitant, having never used that defensive technique,” recalls Varsity Field Hockey coach Mike Wellington.  Liza followed her coach’s advice and stopped the shot but when the ball got trapped below her, a stroke was called.   Pressure was added to an already intense situation.  The Andover player took the shot just five meters away from the goal and scored.
Without hesitation, her teammates ran to Liza with two simple messages: “It’s okay.  We’re in this together.”
“We are a community that welcomes challenges – individually and as a group --  and our players’ actions that day represented the best of Brookwood,” says Coach Wellington.
As part of a community that values effort over perfection, Brookwood students are encouraged to push beyond their comfort zones.   Knowing they have the support of their peers and teachers, no matter the outcome, fosters growth and self-confidence.
The varsity girls lost the game that October day, but it’s impossible to miss what they won in the meantime.
