We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s One School, One Book selection is We Are Definitely Human by X. Fang! Each year, this project brings the entire Brookwood community together to read the same special book. By exploring the story as a school, we spark imagination, encourage conversation, and share a joyful, campus-wide experience.
Have you ever wondered what it really means to be human?
In this playful picture book, three very unusual visitors crash-land in Mr. and Mrs. Li’s field and insist, with great confidence, that they are definitely human. But when you look closely, they’re not quite what you’d expect: they’re blue, wide-eyed, oddly shaped, and speak in a very funny way. Still, Mr. and Mrs. Li welcome them warmly, help fix their “car” (which turns out to be a spaceship!), and show them simple acts of kindness. The visitors are surprised and deeply grateful. Through humor and heart, X. Fang reminds us that being human isn’t about how you look or talk, but about kindness, helping others, and accepting people who are different from us.
We’re also delighted to share that X. Fang will be visiting Brookwood this spring! Born in Taiwan and raised in Georgia, she now creates picture books from her home in Maine. Her warm, imaginative stories include Dim Sum Palace and Broken. We can’t wait for our students to meet her!
