Dear Families,
Over the past several months, a dedicated group of parents, faculty, staff, and external experts have been engaged in thoughtful work as part of our Food Task Force. What began with community input last spring has evolved into a clear and deeply considered articulation of how we think about food at Brookwood.
I’m pleased to share that this work has culminated in our newly developed Food Philosophy & Principles.
At its core, this document reflects something many of us experience instinctively: that food is not separate from learning, but deeply connected to it. It shapes how children feel, how they engage, and how they move through their day. It is part of how they build independence, experience community, and come to understand themselves and the world around them.
What’s most meaningful about this work is that it is both aspirational and practical. It calls us toward meals that support growing bodies and minds, grounded in fresh, thoughtfully prepared ingredients. It affirms our responsibility to help children develop a positive and curious relationship with food, while also honoring cultural traditions, sustainability, and the shared rituals that bring a community together.
Importantly, this is not a static document. It is a guidepost; one that will inform decisions both large and small, from sourcing and partnerships to daily experiences in our dining spaces. It reflects where we are today and where we are headed.
As we begin working with Culinart to bring these principles to life for the coming school year, one area of focus is ensuring that our menu reflects the richness and diversity of our community. Food can serve as both a window and a mirror, and offer students a way to see themselves, and to experience the cultures and traditions of others.
With that in mind, we would love to invite you into this work.
If your family has a recipe that feels meaningful, and something that can be prepared at scale and shared in a school setting, we would be delighted to consider it. Whether it’s a favorite dish, a cultural staple, or something tied to family tradition, these contributions can help shape a food program that feels both authentic and connected to the community we serve.
Please submit your recipe here.
I’m deeply grateful to those who have contributed to this process with such care and thoughtfulness, and to all of you for the perspectives you continue to share. This is ongoing work, and one that will continue to evolve with the community.
I hope you’ll take a few moments to read the philosophy. It offers a meaningful glimpse into how we think about food, as both part of the school day, and also as part of how children grow, connect, and learn.
Warmly,
Jon
