Brookwood School will welcome renowned psychologist and author Dr. Michael G. Thompson on Tuesday, April 14 as part of the school’s 4 to 14 Speaker Series: Parenting Elementary School Kids. The evening will begin with a 6:00 p.m. reception, followed by Dr. Thompson’s 7:00 p.m. presentation.
Drawing on decades of work with children and families—as well as countless hours spent observing classrooms—Dr. Thompson invites parents to see school through a child’s eyes. His talk explores the inner journey children travel from kindergarten through adolescence, highlighting their deep human search for belonging, recognition, and a sense of agency. With warmth, wisdom, and practical insight, he helps parents better understand the emotional landscape of school life and offers guidance for supporting children not only toward achievement, but toward confidence and well-being in a complex world.
Dr. Thompson is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading voices on child development and family life. He is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys and has written or co-authored several influential books on children’s social and emotional development, including Best Friends/Worst Enemies, Mom, They’re Teasing Me, and The Pressured Child. His work has helped generations of parents and educators better understand the experiences children carry with them through their school years.
Established in 2011, Brookwood’s 4 to 14 Speaker Series brings prominent writers, researchers, and thought leaders to campus to explore the opportunities and challenges of raising and educating elementary-aged children. The series reflects Brookwood’s longstanding commitment to partnering with families and to sharing insights from leaders in child development with the broader community.
